A junior from West Drayton in the United Kingdom, Akopian finished first in the 100 butterfly (52.82) in a dual team win over Emory. Akopian also claimed first place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.76.
He also finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.16. Akopian also helped the 200 freestyle relay team take first place with a time of 1:25.80. Akopian led things off in the relay with a 50 freestyle time of 21.25.
