A senior from Rutherfordton, North Carolina, Spears went a perfect 4-0 at 174 pounds at the NWCA National Duals to help lead the Wolves to a fourth-place finish. He started the weekend with a 5-3 decision over sixth-ranked Josh Jacobs of No. 3 McKendree and then defeated Colter Bye of No. 14 Upper Iowa via a 6-2 decision on Jan. 6.
In the tournament semifinals on Jan. 7, Spears earned the only points for the Wolves against No. 1 Central Oklahoma with a 12-3 major decision. He wrapped up the event with a 7-4 decision over No. 11 Billy Higgins of No. 5 Nebraska-Karney to improve to 10-3 on the year.
