Belmont Abbey's Cureton and Thompson Named Conference Carolinas Baseball Players of the Week
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Belmont Abbey College's Luke Cureton was tabbed the Conference Carolinas Baseball Player of the Week, while teammate Jeff Thompson was tabbed the Conference Carolinas Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 19-25, the Conference announced today.
A senior from Indianapolis, Ind., Cureton led the Crusaders to a perfect 5-0 record, including a sweep of Conference Carolinas foe Southern Wesleyan. He posted 12 hits, including five doubles and one homer, with a .571 average. He also scored nine runs, drove in seven RBI and stole four bases.
Cureton currently has a .348 batting average with 23 hits, 20 RBI and 10 doubles. His doubles rank first in Conference Carolinas, while his RBI and hits rank second and third, respectively.
Thompson, a senior from Cameron, N.C., threw a two-hit complete game for the Crusaders in a 3-0 win over Southern Wesleyan last weekend. He issued three walks, but still fanned eight batters in the victory.
Thompson has two wins on the season with 27 strikeouts. His 27 strikeouts rank sixth in Conference Carolinas, while his wins rank 10th.
