King's Valdes and Boyd Named Conference Carolinas Baseball Players of the Week
HIGH POINT, N.C. – King University's Tony Valdes was tabbed the Conference Carolinas Baseball Player of the Week, while teammate Grant Boyd was tabbed the Conference Carolinas Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played Mar. 26 - Apr. 1, the Conference announced today.
Valdes, a junior from Miami, Fla., led King to a 5-1 record last week, including a three-game sweep of Conference foe Limestone. He tallied two singles, two doubles, two triples and two home runs on the week for a .400 batting average to go with eight runs scored and six RBI.
Valdes currently has 41 hits for a .345 batting average with 27 RBI and five triples on the year. His triple total ranks first in Conference Carolinas. This marks his first POTW honor and King's fifth overall of the season.
A senior from Chesterfield, Va., Boyd pitched 10 and two-thirds innings for the Tornado while notching one win last week. His week got started with a one and two-thirds innings appearance against Mars Hill, which the righty gave up no hits and tallied four strikeouts. Boyd would then throw a complete game in a 4-2 victory over Limestone. In the contest, Boyd surrendered 10 hits with four walks and allowed two runs, one of which was earned, but still punched out 10 batters in the outing.
Boyd is 5-2 on the season with 56 strikeouts and a 2.87 ERA. Both his five wins and 2.87 ERA rank fifth in Conference Carolinas, while his 56 strikeouts are sixth in the league. This marks his first POTW honor and King's fifth overall of the season.
